Harnessing the cool, year-round headwater streams at elevations from 800 to over 1,000 meters above sea level, nearly 90% of households in Nam An hamlet, Tan Quang commune, have embraced sturgeon farming, transforming mountain mist and forest streams into a sustainable livelihood and a pathway to a brighter future for the highland community.
Nam An is blessed with abundant water resources and a stable temperature of 15–18°C - ideal conditions for sturgeon to thrive. |
A system of pipes channels fresh spring water directly into fish tanks, ensuring continuous circulation, cleanliness, and high oxygen levels.
Mr. Trieu Chan Loang was the pioneer who first brought sturgeon to Nam An, working alongside fellow villagers to build what is now known as the “sturgeon capital” of the highlands.
Starting from scratch, his family now raises over 40,000 market-ready fish, producing 15 - 20 tons annually and earning revenues of VND2.7 million - VND4 billion. |
His household is also the only one in Nam An to successfully breed sturgeon fingerlings, supplying local farmers at half the market price. |
Farmers carefully balance daily feed quantities to ensure consistent growth and meet commercial standards. |
Aerators installed in the tanks boost oxygen levels, especially during the rainy season, when households shut off headwater inflows to prevent turbidity, contamination, and disease. |
Mr. Loang also founded the Nam An Sturgeon Cooperative, which brings together 26 members to improve product quality and expand market access. |
All products from the cooperative are labeled with traceability stamps, guaranteeing their origin and quality. |
Villagers are eager when fish reach optimal weight, secure high prices, and enjoy stable demand, providing sustainable income. |
38 out of 44 households in Nam An raise sturgeon, each selling 3–5 tons annually and earning between VND540 million and over VND1 billion. |
